British game industry trade journal MCV is reporting today that Sony's European division is considering legal action against the British National Health Service over the use of a PlayStation-like controller in the ad. According to the story, the agency that put together the ad never sought Sony's persmission to use the distinctively designed PlayStation controller. The ad itself, part of the "Change 4 Life" campaign designed to promote heart-healthy lifestyles including getting more exercise and eating healthier foods, has drawn considerable criticism from the British offices of Konami and Codemasters as well as MCV itself.

If you were waiting for id's car combat game Rage to get your virtual Mad Max on, you're going to have to wait a bit longer. id's Todd Hollenshead revealed to Game Trailers' Geoff Keighley that Rage "won't be out this year." That's not necessarily as upsetting as might at first be thought because id gave itself a very wide release window when the game was announced two years ago, merely saying that the game would hit store shelves some time before 2011.

Starting today, EA Mythic is providing some bigger incentives to players who evangelize Warhammer Online with enough fervor to attract their friends to the game. You get 30 days of free time for the first taste you dangle in front of a friend. After the second, you'll get an in-game pet on top of the play time. After the fourth, you'll get an item that boosts XP and "Renown" for your group. Beyond that, it's just play time. But maybe Mythic just isn't done designing incentive doodads. Full details are here.

Gamasutra published an interview today with Masaya Matsuura, PaRappa the Rapper's creator. Conducted late last year, the interview is far ranging, but one interesting tidbit arose when the topic of music game peripherals came up. Matsuura told Gamasutra that he's more interested in conveying the act of playing music through his software, rather than via an extraneous peripheral. He said to Gamasutra: As I told you, I really want to feel as if I'm playing the actual guitar... Of course the game controller and the real guitar, there's a very big difference between them, but if I can overcome these kinds of differences by making good software.. Maybe that is what's interesting to me. I really want to make the experience appeal derive from playing the software. It's a very potent thing. Matsuura also had some interesting stuff to say about the material costs involved in producing music game peripherals -- specifically, where they'll end up if our interest in plastic instruments were to wane.

Boxing fans have made their voices heard. EA fired up an online poll for Fight Night fans to choose between Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson as the cover athlete for the upcoming Fight Night Round 4, and the voting skewed toward adding both boxing legends to the game's cover. Here's the result: EA's press release also indicates that fans of the Fight Night series can pre-order the game to get a download code for early demo access. The release date is set for a slightly vague "summer" timeline. Sterling says: Well, this is one way to avoid the EA Sports curse: Put two retired legends on the cover. I've been a huge fan of Fight Night since its inception five years ago, and I'm excited about "Iron Mike"-era Tyson joining the roster, as the series could use a few more good heavyweights to pull me away from the quick and agile middleweight class.
